Favourite Places – The Pantheon

If I had a chance I’d get married here. It’s my favourite place in Rome. The Pantheon is the oldest church in the city. It’s amazing and I just can’t describe the feeling you get when you walk inside it for the first time. You are dwarfed by the feeling openness.

The only way the interior is lit is by the occulus. The round whole at the top of the dome fills the room with light. The dome is created to fit a perfect circle inside and heavier to lighter stone was used in it’s construction. A revolution in it’s day that still stands the testament of time.

Many buildings have been based off it’s design including the Duomo in Florence and countless state buildings in the U.S.A. like the Capital Building.

The current incarnation has survived the sac of Rome and other barbarian hordes and now is a Catholic Church, but the original succumbed to fire in 80 AD and was rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in 126 AD.
